Biofuel by milk in New Zealand
New Zealand's smallest oil company today launched the first commercial biofuel to hit the nation's service station forecourts a petrol blended with
ethanol made from milk. Gull New Zealand has launched a biofuel, Gull Force 10, which, it claims, is the first biofuel for everyday transport use to be made commercially available in New Zealand. It is 90% premium gasoline and 10% bioethanol which comes from whey - a dairy by-product. Biofuel is any fuel derived from biomass. The ethanol is being supplied by dairy producer Fonterra sourced from whey which is a natural by-product of the New Zealand dairy industry. Fonterra's chairman Henry van der Heyden congratulated Gull on its investment in a more sustainable fuel option for New Zealanders. New Zealand's Prime Minister, said the government was pleased to see Gull biofuel by national milk. In February the Government set a national target of 3.4 per cent for the biofuel component of petrol and diesel in 2012. At $1.61 a litre Gull Force 10 produces lower emissions and is cleaner burning.
