SOME US CITIES RATIFY KYOTO AGREEMENT
Australia and the United States are the only two leading industrial nations that refuse to accept the Kyoto Protocol to reduce carbon dioxide emissions. Despite the refusal of the United States to accept Kyoto proposals, more than 300 cities in the nation, including Washington, have agreed to reduce greenhouse gas emissions in the spirit of the Kyoto Protocol on behalf of future generations. Gov. Arnold Schwarzen-egger and the state of California have become leaders in the movement to reduce emissions. The movement began nearly two years ago, when Seattle Mayor Greg Nickels announced that his city would strive to meet the targets of the Kyoto Protocol, an international treaty that aims to control global warming. Unhappy with federal resistance to world standards, communities are curbing their energy use and emissions.
