Sustainable Mobility

Sustainable Mobility, also commonly referred to as Sustainable Transportation or Sustainable transport. Sustainable Mobility is about meeting or helping meet the mobility needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet these needs. The terms is an almost accidental follow-on to the earlier term Sustainable Development whose origins in turn were the 1987 Our Common Future (1987, World Commission on Environment and Development of the United Nations).

  • Road pricing
The term includes fuel taxes, licence fees, tolls, and congestion charges, including those which may vary by time of day, by the specific road, or by the specific vehicle type, being used.

  • Carpooling
Carpooling is shared use of a car, often by people who each have a car but travel together to save costs and in the interest of other socio-environmental benefits mentioned below. It's also known as ride-sharing, lift-sharing.

  • Carsharing
Carsharing is a system where a fleet of cars is jointly-owned by the users in distinction from car rental or cars in private ownership. The costs and troubles of vehicle purchase, ownership and maintenance are transferred to a central organizer.
